What's your least favorite number?

triskaidekaphobia \tris-ky-dek-uh-FOH-bee-uh\, noun:
A morbid fear of the number 13 or the date Friday the 13th.

I did not realize it was Friday the 13th until this girl I taught this morning mentioned it. I do not really believe in the whole Friday the 13th = bad luck. I do not really look at things in terms of luck. I try to eliminate the phrases good luck and bad luck out of my everday speech. Luck aside, if things are going to happen, then they will happen. I find it very irritating when people confuse luck with accomplishment. Bill gates is a millionaire, billionaire at that. Some people will say he is "lucky." Obviously he worked hard to get where he is. How about using the phrase "man, hard-work pays off" rather than "man, he got lucky."

But that is "good luck". On the other hand, bad luck just seems like an excuse for ones troubles. [dangit, I was going to say ones mishaps, but one of the definitions for mishaps is simply bad luck] I do not think one particular day will cover you with a black cloud of problems and "bad luck", unless you create problems and blame the day.

It is probably a superstitious thing, it has got to be to some degree right? Hmm, I am superstitious about some things too, just not this.
Maybe the whole day thing -Friday the 13th-is evoked with how you grew up, who you grew up with, and how you spent your Fridays. Friday the 13th always seemed like another day to me. You too?

And I do not have a favorite or least favorite number, do you, why or whynot?

On a lighter note, my birthday is in 2 days :)

I don't have any least favorite numbers.

As for the whole luck thing, I think "luck" is basically an excuse that people can use to explain why they're not where more successful/rich people are.

A vast majority of millionaires (according to many studies) are self-made. Only about 5% are due to inheritances. And there has been a boost in millionaires in the last decades.

When people say that X millionaire is "lucky" and that's why he's a millionaire, it's sad but that person is simply reaffirming that they will most likely never get to that level, because they simply don't understand how it works.

A better definition of luck (though not the best) is that it is when opportunity meets preparation. In my studies of successful people, they are very prepared for the opportunities that come to them, and they've all worked hard to get to where they are.

But here's an interesting catch. Opportunities are everywhere at every moment! We just cannot see them! So a millionaire may take advantage of something because s/he's prepared and is able to notice it, whereas the poor person either doesn't notice it, or doesn't know how to take advantage of it (i.e. they're not prepared).

So when I hear people talking about so-and-so got lucky, I think it's an unfortunate trap that they locked themselves into, especially if they ever want to get "lucky" themselves.

I have heard that definition of luck.
Luck is where opportunity meets preparation.
I agree with it too, if you are prepared, the opportunity will be there to take advantage of, and it is when you take advantage of it, you are successful or "lucky."

thanks for the comment metro

And people who realize they can create their own opportunities at any given time are often confused with "lucky."
